The Russian Case Programme was initiated by the Golden Mask Festival in 2000 as a showcase of the Russian theatre aimed at festival directors, producers, theatre journalists and critics. The showcase is annually attended by some 90 guests from 25-30 countries. For many of them participation in the Russian Case has become an integral part of their professional life.

The Russian Case programme, which includes performances from previous seasons nominated for the Golden Mask, as well as some of the most interesting premiers of the current season, has been shaped over the years by reputed theatre critics, like Marina Timasheva, John Freedman, Roman Dolzhansky, Marina Davydova and Elena Kovalskaya.

The Russian Case organizers aim to present the latest Russian theatre to theatre specialists from all over the world. The Russian Case is the place for dialogue between the Russian and world theatre; it provides a space for creative interaction, information and professional exchange.

In practical terms, the Russian Case has led to collaborations between Russian and foreign theatres and festivals, as well as international press coverage and articles being published in magazines and theatre journals. Russian productions are invited to take part in international theatre festivals and theatre directors are invited to stage productions outside of Russia; contemporary Russian plays are translated into foreign languages and performed in other countries etc.

For the Golden Mask, an important outcome of the Russian Case programme is that international projects of the Golden Mask are produced together with the foreign partners of the Festival. Since 2004 the best Russian productions the Golden Mask nominees and winners have been presented in Estonia and Latvia. In 2008 and in 2011 programmes of significant Russian theatre productions The Best of Russian Theatre were presented in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. In the autumn of 2010 Golden Mask in collaboration with the Belarus partners presented a festival of Russian theatre in Minsk, and in the spring of 2011 a similar project took place in Israel.

The 13th edition of the Russian Case will take place from April 5 till April 10, 2012.

The curator of Russian case-2012 is Elena Kovalskaya, a leading theatre critic, columnist of the Afisha magazine. The selection for the RC-2012 programme is under way and will be finalized by mid December.
