GOBO. A DIGITAL GLOSSARY

AKHE Theatre, St. Petersburg
Director Yana Tumina

Moscow’s audiences have known the artists and inventors of the synthetic theatre of Pavel Semchenko and Maxim Isaev for a long time. Spectators have even learnt to understand the subtleties of their intricate, but incredibly striking and effective art. The Russian Engineering Theatre AKHE originates from the vanguard of Petersburg’s past, where the marginal groups exploded at the height of the 1990s – with rockers and river-artists, Timur Novikov’s pupils and Sergei Kurekhin’s fans. This brief digression into AKHE’s history is deliberate here: “Gobo. A Digital Glossary” is the essence of interesting ideas: the collection of mute micro-plots created in different genres and with different techniques, from cinema to shadow play. Ironically playing a trick on the average hero of modernity, the creators of the show remember nostalgically those times when their not-standard installations were the ideal replacement for a visit to a night-club
